Bars and Nightclubs are both highly regulated and highly profitable. Because of alcohol sales and their high potential for assorted vice crimes, state and local governments monitor bars and nightclubs carefully. In some cities such as Philadelphia, a bar or nightclub may need up to 12 licenses and permits. Navigating the maze of applications and processes required to start such a business can be daunting.
Indianapolis is one of the Midwest's most populous cities and a center of commerce for the entire region. Both the city and state encourage business development in part by centralizing licensing and making requirements clear. Although the state does most of the regulating, Indianapolis has a number of permits to protect consumers and ensure a harmonious, safe community. The city's primary industries are manufacturing, health care and social services, and retail trade. However, despite its manufacturing industries, Indianapolis does not have the same concentration of manufacturing as many other Indiana towns and cities. However, it is more diverse in the service sector and has positioned its airport to be a major transit and commercial shipping hub.
