Retail businesses of all sorts including toy stores, clothing shops, photography businesses and general merchandisers need licenses and permits. In most cases, retail businesses take relatively few licenses – however being registered for all state and local taxes is important as is having any needed general business licenses.
Sarasota welcomes entrepreneurs to its white sand-lined shores. City and county licenses are kept at a bare minimum while most regulation is performed by Florida. Local entrepreneurs operating food, education, and certain personal service businesses face the most regulation. Additionally, local businesses pay license fees to state, county and city governments. Sarasota's economy is fueled largely by tourism, the arts and spending by retirees which in turn has fueled real estate development and construction. The beautiful, tropical community is known for its theater, dance, and music companies. Sarasota does not have many other major industries.
